Repayment Terms and Options

Your funding on your Harvard University Graduate Student Loan is granted and held by the not-for-profit, member owned, Harvard University Employees Credit Union. Click here for answers to frequently asked questions.

With the repayment of the program, you pay the same amount every month for the period between potential interest rate changes for the duration of the repayment period. If the interest rate increases or decreases, your monthly payment amount adjusts accordingly in order to ensure the loan is fully paid over the remaining repayment period.

No prepayment penalty
There is no penalty for prepayment. Any additional monies can be applied to the principal balance of the loan. The loan must be paid in U.S. dollars.

Making Payments

View your balances, make payments, and receive your statements electronically. Please note that the loan must be paid in U.S. dollars.

  • Pay view eCheck electronic transfer from your U.S. bank account. Auto Pay Discount: there is a 0.25% rate discount during repayment for automated electronic payment.
  • Pay via credit card. Payments to your student loan may be made with your credit card.
  • Pay via wire transfer. Wire transfer instructions are available online at the Student Loan Servicing Website.
  • Pay via TravelEx/Western Union. You can make your payment in your currency of choice (over 25 current options available) which will then be converted to U.S. dollars. The exchange rate is valid for 72 hours from the initiated transaction. There are NO transaction charges from TravelEx, though you may be charged a fee by your local bank.
  • Pay by mail. make check payable to HUECU and include your account number or borrower number on your payment or include the payment stub. Checks and money orders from a U.S. bank in U.S. dollars are accepted.

Balance Financial Counseling

We provide immediate access to a financial counselor by phone Monday through Thursday, 5am to 8pm (PST), Friday, 5am to 5pm, and Saturday, 8am to 5pm. Balance counselors can answer a wide variety of financial and credit related questions and send you supplementary materials on your areas of interest.
