Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SUM Selective Surcharging Program? SUM is a selective surcharging program offered by Harvard University Credit Union and administered by NYCE Payments Network, LLC, a Metavante company. Cardholders of HUECU can make withdrawals without paying a surcharge at designated ATMs of other SUM Program Members.

Do I need to become a member at HUECU, or is a “special” SUM ATM card required? No. Simply use your existing Harvard University Credit Union Debit Card the same way you now do.

How do I find a SUM Program ATM? All HUECU ATM's are free for our members and our part of the SUM program. To locate other SUM Program ATMs, visit the SUM online locator. Be sure to look for the SUM logo on participating SUM ATMs.

How many SUM ATMs are available, and are there any outside of the United States? There are currently more than 2,900 SUM Program ATMs in 27 states and Puerto Rico. Additional locations continue to be added every month.

What is the difference between a surcharge fee and a service fee? A surcharge is a fee assessed by the ATM owner (not by HUECU) and is clearly itemized on your ATM receipt. This is the charge you avoid by using a SUM Program ATM. A service fee is a separate and distinct charge assessed by HUECU for withdrawals or other types of transactions conducted at ATMs that Harvard University Credit Union doesn’t own.
